Illinois State Parks PDF Print E-mail

Illinois has been blessed with a variety of topography. There are marshlands, rocky cliffs, lakes, prairies, rolling hills, mighty rivers, trickling streams, and endless flatlands. These environments are certainly well represented in the 107 state lands that are dedicated to public use. These areas have been categorized as follows:

  • Conservation Areas
  • Fish and Wildlife Areas
  • State Forests
  • State Parks

Each of these areas will be covered in this section, but space does not permit narrative summaries of these facilities. Instead, brief outlines provide pertinent information and the address/telephone number where more detailed information can be obtained.

You should contact the ranger/caretaker and obtain the pocket-sized flyer(s) covering the facility you wish to use. These flyers are excellent sources of information, oftentimes providing maps, local history, details regarding camping arrangements, special needs, costs, group camping arrangements, seasonal information, etc. See the address and telephone numbers for each area.

Please note the following if you consider camping at any of these facilities from Illinois Department of Conservation Recreational Areas Guide.

  1. "A camping permit must be obtained upon arrival at the site from site personnel of Campground Host. Most sites with camping facilities allow group camping. Both group camping and family camping are limited to 14 nights in a 30-day period. Check-out time is 3 p.m."
  2. "Rent-A-Camp facilities are available at a limited number of sites. For a nominal fee, the participant has the use of a tent and camping gear already in place at the site."
  3. "Camp site reservations are accepted at some areas."
  4. "Campers should bring their own firewood. Information on facilities and programs may be obtained by contacting any Department of Conservation Office."

Please see the following codes used in this section to describe the facilities available.

H - Indicates that the facilities are accessible to the handicapped (meaning physically handicapped persons requiring the use of a wheelchair.)
A - Camping sites with, or with access to, a vehicular entrance/exit, showers and electricity.
B - Camping sites with, or with access to, a vehicular entrance/exit, showers or electricity.
C - Camping sites permitting vehicular access.
D - Camping sites with no vehicular access (i.e., tent camping; primitive sites accessible only by walk-in or backpacking).
E - Camping sites available to youth groups only.
